Branka u Opavy Municipal Office.
There are two municipalities in our republic, which have Branka in their name. One is ours, the other is near Pilsen. Branka u Opavy, which according to the 2001 census had 1017 inhabitants, is located in the 300 m wide Moravice valley between the foothills of the Low Jeseník, at an altitude of 255 m. to the east, Branecký Hill rises sharply (376 m). From it, above the former quarry, there is a view of the fertile Opava lowlands to the north and Praděd and the Jeseníky ridge can be seen to the west.
It is not known exactly when the village was founded. The oldest written information in the Latin document dates from 1257. In the Middle Ages, an attempt was made to Germanize the name, but Branka remained Czech.
Historians claim that its name indicates the place where the gate stood in the defensive wall, which defended the agricultural fortress Hradec before
raids from the north, from where in 1241 the Tatars invaded the region.
