The city of Prostějov is part of the Olomouc region. It is located in the northern part of the Horn Moravian Valley, at the foot of the Prostějovská hills, in the eastern part of the Czech Republic.
The first mention of Prostějov, which is called the Hanác Jerusalem, dates from the first half of the 12th century. Today's historic core of the city is a declared monument zone.
The main cultural and social center and at the same time one of the architectural landmarks of Prostějov is the National House, an important cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It was built in the years 1905-1907 according to the design of architect Jan Kotěra, a professor at UMPRUM in Prague and a leading representative of Czech modern architecture.
The city center is dominated by the new town hall built in 1911-1914 according to the design of prof. K. H. Kepky in the style called historicism. Emphasis was placed on the verticality of the 66 meter high tower enriching the silhouette of the city in distant views. Above the bay window is dominated by the clock, which shows the calendar months of the year, the position of the moon and the sun in the sky.
Other sights include the Prostejov Castle on Pernštýnské Square, on the entrance facade of which there is a well-known sentence: Hanák tade bode do skání svět..., the Church of the Ascension of St. Kříže, Museum of Prostějovsk (former town hall), Plague column with a statue of P. Maria, birthplace of Jiří Wolker, baroque church of St. John of Nepomuck, parish church of St. Peter and Paul and the church of St. Cyril and Methodius.
Prostějov is a city of poetry festivals, theatrical life and a city of sports. That is why every visitor can find here what they are interested in and what they are looking for in vain elsewhere.
