Laser plasma – experimental and theoretical research
The Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, headquartered in Prague, focuses on experimental and theoretical research and applications of plasma produced by high power laser beams. The experimental research is carried out on one of the largest lasers in Europe. The department also cooperates with other inland workplaces that are engaged in plasma research.
Specialization of the theoretical plasma physics research
The theoretically oriented part of laser plasma phenomena research is focused mostly on modelling of processes that emerge during the interaction of strong electromagnetic field with matter. The theoretical study places special emphasis on the mechanisms of charged particle acceleration in plasma. The possibilities of utilization in new types of plasma particle accelerators are studied as well.

Terawatt iodine laser
The experimental study is conducted on a unique iodine laser with a performance of 1 TW. The laser is known under the name Prague Asterix Lase Systém and is run by the Institute of Plasma Physics. It has been in operation since 2000 and it is also a key experimental device of the whole Institute.

Topics that are studied experimentally
Thanks to the modern equipment, a whole range of important topics can be experimentally studied and verified. These include, for instance, the study of plasmas from gas targets, radiative properties of laser plasma, ablation processes on the surface of laser targets or processes of formation and acceleration of charged particles in plasma.
