Horní Benešov was founded as a mining town in 1253, ores containing silver, gold, lead, zinc and iron were mined here. The silver mines in Benešov were among the oldest in the country. In the second half of the 15th century, 22 ore smelters were in operation, located on the Benešovský
outskirts.
