Obec Velka Polom

Opavska 58, Velka Polom 747 64
Great Polom.
The village is one of the oldest in the Silesian region. Unfortunately, there are few sources from which the oldest facts about the lives of our ancestors can be read.
More than 730 years ago, a terrible storm came, a violent gale uprooted centuries-old trees and uprooted a large part of the forest. The surrounding residents used these logs to build their dwellings and established a settlement on the cleared land, which they called Velký Polom, later the name was changed to Velká Polom.
The first mention of the village dates back to 1288. The village was owned by the feudal lord Vikart, but it is not known whether he built it or took it over and conquered it. However, it can be assumed that the village was founded much earlier, because the local parish church is dedicated to St. Václav, to which the Přemyslov family gave their consent.
Velká Polom became a parish village, whose spiritual administration included the surrounding villages: Čavisov, Hrabyně, Smolkov, Lhotka, Krásní Pole, Horní and Dolní Lhota. In 1784, Velká Polomi was renamed Hrabyně, in 1905 Chabičov. Since 1508 (when records have been kept), 27 parish priests and 48 chaplains worked here.
The village of Velká Polom is located in the Moravian-Silesian region and since January 1, 2007 it has been one of the peripheral parts of the Ostrava–město district. With its area of 1165 ha, it is a medium-sized municipality. It lies on the connection between the cities of Ostrava and Opava, represented by the I/11 state road. Velká Polom also played an important role in ancient history, and its good facilities correspond to this.
Important buildings include the church of St. Václava, parish office, owned by the municipality, it is a cultural center, a more than 130-year-old building, reconstructed in 2006.
It houses a pharmacy, a health center, a spacious social hall and several clubhouses.
The basement provides pleasant seating in a stylish environment, it is possible to organize celebrations, exhibitions, social organizations and associations use it for meeting activities.

Currently, a development project is being implemented in the Mlýnek locality. Thanks to this, the number of inhabitants in the village is constantly increasing.
In 2009, the municipal office building was repaired. All parts of the school grounds were gradually modernized. The renovation began in 2005 with the reconstruction of the oldest part of the elementary school, in 2010 and 2011 the newer part of the elementary school was reconstructed and built, a new kindergarten was built and a multifunctional playground was built in the school garden. At the same time, a modern tribune and facilities for athletes were built next to the football field. The reconstruction of other buildings followed - the firemen's house in 2012, and the following year the gardeners' house was reconstructed into a public library and the Rákosníček pond near the kindergarten, new sidewalks were gradually built and old ones repaired around the most frequented roads. In 2015, there was an extensive reconstruction of the falconry, including the beautification of its surroundings, the building in which the Police of the Czech Republic is based was fundamentally modernized, as well as the gymnasium at the primary school. In 2016, the multi-purpose playground at the elementary school was roofed - a unique hall was created for almost year-round operation.
As of January 1, 2016, the village of Velká Polom has 2, 043 inhabitants.
