Dolní Lhota is located in the western part of the Ostrava - City District, above the left bank of the middle stream of the Porubka Stream.
It is located approximately in the middle between the cities of Ostrava and Opava. The cadastral area of the village is 536 ha and currently there live 1437 inhabitants.

The original name of the settlement according to old records from 1424 was Lhotka, from 1464 Lhotka Důlní, in the years 1514-1924 Malá Lhota, then until today Dolní Lhota.
The historical mention of the village dates back to 1377, when the court of Lhotka Důlní belonged to Jindřich of Bítov.
The sources of the Opava Provincial Archive show that on 30 May 1465, Lhotka was bought by the Žibřid and Mikuláš Donát Mine Brothers, and in 1486 the village was sold to the Praguers of Bílkov. Until the end of the 17th century the village belonged to Klimkovice manor. Until 1918, the last owner of the Lhotský estate was the Vlček family.

During the occupation Dolní Lhota was part of the Sudetenland. During the liberation fighting fell to five hundred soldiers, among them nine members of the first MS. separate tank brigade and seventeen citizens of the village. The fallen tankers were built a memorial at the local cemetery. In the center of the village there are two memorials to fallen soldiers and local citizens in memory of heavy fighting.
Near the school stands a memorial to the founder of the Czechoslovak state and the first president T.G.Maryaryk.
