The village of Dobřany is located in the Hradec Králové Region in the northwestern part of the Eagle Mountains, 630 m above sea level. The name of the village is derived from the place where people lived and farmed on good land. The first written mention is from 1361.
At present, the municipality and its cadastral territory occupies an area of 405 ha. Of this, 185 ha are agricultural land, 191 ha are forest land, the built-up area is 4 ha. There are about 100 houses, less than half of which are used for recreation.
One of the most important buildings is the Baroque church of St. Mikuláš from 1759, a timbered rectory from 1855 and in the western part of the village, the remains of a once large castle, whose origins date back to the 12th century. In the center of the village stands a memorable lime tree allegedly as old as the village itself.
In the village there is a general store, water supply, multipurpose and playground from 2005.
It has a very long tradition of education in Dobřany, it was allegedly taught here as early as 1672, but the school was not built until 1742. At present, there is a nine-year primary school in the village, run by the non-profit organization Trivium Plus. The school has great success and is attended by about 150 students who also commute from the surrounding area.
Of the local associations, it is worth mentioning the Volunteer Fire Brigade, which was founded in 1887. In 1927, the Sokol Gymnastics Unit was founded. Its members built their own building in 1931, which is used for various social events to this day.
Dobřany is known mainly for autocross and motocross races. The local Automotoklub was founded in 1957. In 1973, the first live broadcast from Dobřany to Czechoslovak Television took place in the Rychnov nad Kněžnou district, near the Orlické autocross. Since 1981, international autocross races have been held at the local racetrack. The largest race was the European Team Championship in 1987 with the participation of 10 countries. At present, the car club is mainly dedicated to organizing the Racer Buggy Autocross and the Moto Skijöring Championship.
