Smiřice lies in a plain near the upper reaches of the Elbe River. At Smiřice, the Elbe divided into at least three branches and over the years it reshaped its riverbeds. Frequent floods brought sand, gravel and fertile reddish soil to this region. The sand is deposited deeper below the topsoil and has been mined in two songs over the past 20 years.
