Air Malta was established as the national air carrier of the Republic of Malta in 1973, with the aim of promoting, developing and operating air transport to and from Malta which serves the national interest by carrying passengers, goods and mail. It started its operations in April 1974 with two Boeing 720B aircraft and routes to London, Birmingham, Manchester, Rome, Frankfurt, Paris and Tripoli. It now operates flights to 45 destinations in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
