Mesto Holysov


The town of Holýšov on the right bank of the Radbuza River at the foot of the hill Trný and Makový vrch in the Domažlice district in the Pilsen Region. It is the second largest city in the Domažlice district. The surroundings of Holýšov, as evidenced by archaeological findings from prehistoric mounds, was inhabited in the Early Bronze Age, around 2000 BC. The first written records of the existence of the village date back to 1272. At the beginning of the 19th century, black coal, lead, zinc, silver and graphite were mined here. A large glass and mirror glass factory was also established here. It was the largest enterprise of its kind in Austria-Hungary. In 1934 the glassworks was closed down. Currently, Holýšov has 5 191 inhabitants.
