Silesian Ostrava was founded in the 13th century. The district is part of the city of Ostrava, located in the Ostrava Basin.
The Silesian Ostrava city district is the largest district of Ostrava with an area of 4, 175 hectares. It includes eight cadastral areas - own Silesian Ostrava, Antošovice, Heřmanice, Hrušov, Koblov, Kunčičky, Kunčice nad Ostravicí and Muglinov. It is almost 19 kilometers long, 4 km wide and extends from Vrbice to Vratimov. The district has over 21, 000 inhabitants.

7750 live in Silesian Ostrava alone, 291 inhabitants in Antošovice, 2339 in Heřmanice, 2143 in Hrušov, 1172 in Koblov, 782 in Kunčice, 1901 in Kunčičky, 4242 in Muglinov.

Until 1919, this part of the city had the nickname Polish.
The transformation of the originally agricultural villages on the right bank of the Ostravice into an industrial area took place after the discovery of coal in 1763. Coal mining was an attribute of Silesian Ostrava until the early 1990s. After the end of mining activities, light industry companies were established on the premises of former mines.
At present, the entire circuit is gasified, drained in many places. The environment has improved so that fish can be caught in the Ostravice River.

The extensive network of school facilities in the district consists of kindergartens, primary, secondary and tertiary schools - the Faculty of Science of the University of Ostrava on Chitussiho Street and the University of Business on Michálkovická Street.

The cultural activities of the citizens are provided by a network of local libraries and two cultural houses. The Singing Association of Silesian Ostrava has in its repertoire secular and spiritual compositions of all musical styles, compositions of old masters as well as arrangements of folk songs and works by contemporary authors. Chamber concerts, held since 1999 in the ceremonial hall of the Silesian - Ostrava City Hall, have gained fame.

Since 2008, the Silesian-Ostrava Gallery has also been a part of the town hall. It offers a wide range of exhibitions from fine art, through architecture to photography.

Sports fans from all over the country know the famous Silesian-based Bazaly Stadium, whose capacity exceeds
19, 000 seats for spectators.

At the water bay of the former gravel pit in Koblov, there is a naturist beach, one of the largest and most beautiful of its kind in the Czech Republic.
