Originally a royal city mentioned in sources in 1305, it was based on a regular geometric outline and became an important center of Pocidliní.
The most valuable monument is the medieval floor plan of the city center itself and the Gothic church of St. Lawrence from the beginning of the 14th century. It is one of the few city churches untouched by purist reconstructions. From the defunct Minorite monastery, which stood northeast of the square, only the vaulted console, walled up in the passage of the new town hall, survived. A large Jewish quarter existed in the area of the monastery from the 16th century. Only the newer synagogue survived from it (today the prayer hall of the Czech Brethren Evangelical Church). In the southern part of the city, opposite the falconry, a valuable Jewish cemetery, founded in 1520, has been preserved. It is the third oldest in the Czech Republic after Prague and Cologne.
