Approximately 5 kilometers east of Opava, a short distance from the left bank of the river Opava lies Velké Hoštice. The village has a very long and rich history. It is one of the oldest inhabited villages in the Hlučín region and in the whole of Silesia. Archaeological excavations testify to the presence of inhabitants in the cadastre of the village as early as the 6th millennium BC.
There are currently over 50 private companies and sole traders in the village, among the associations we can mention at least volunteer firefighters, a football club, a tennis club, breeders, gardeners, the Red Cross, a hunting association. The village has literally flourished and is becoming a really pleasant place to live. Despite the devastating floods in 1997, the lower end of the village was improved, the beauty of the renovated castle park attracts residents and visitors for walks, the restored facades of the castle and the church form an inseparable dominant feature of the village. In the lower part of the village there is a wastewater treatment plant, the municipal sewer is undergoing extensive reconstruction. In the village there are three football fields, basketball and ball games, tennis courts, playground. The primary and kindergarten, the village square and the sidewalks underwent reconstruction. 34 new houses have been built on the western side of the village, and another 28 plots are being prepared for the construction of family houses this year.
