The statutory town of Opava is a district town in the Moravian-Silesian Region on the river Opava. The history of the city dates back to the early Stone Age, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds. Opava was first mentioned as a town in 1224. Until 1928 it was the capital of Bohemian Silesia. Every historical period has left its mark on the city. Opava also has a number of important natives, including the poet Petr Bezruč (real name Vladimír Vašek), the painter Leo Haas and the actor Boris Rösner.
