The town of Šternberk with almost 15, 000 inhabitants has a rich history. Šternberk is located in the region of Central Moravia, near the Moravian metropolis of Olomouc.
The first written mention of Šternberk comes from 1296, the history of the town is closely connected with the castle. A settlement was established in its suburbs, which later became an important center of the market, crafts and trade. In 2011, we will commemorate the 715th anniversary of the first written mention of the city.
The main landmarks of the town include the Sternberk State Castle, a complex of buildings of the former Augustinian monastery with the Church of the Annunciation and a set of restored burgher houses in the monument zone. The castle was often rebuilt and so it is possible to find elements of all styles - from Gothic to Classicism, in 2001 it was declared a National Cultural Monument. In the castle you can see a unique set of tiled stoves, the oldest preserved Renaissance wood carving in Moravia - The Suffering of St. Kunhuty, an Art Nouveau passenger lift and other uniqueness you will not find anywhere else.
The information system was installed in the center of Sternberg in May 2008. At nine stops, every visitor to the city can hear interesting information about Sternberg, the history of the city and its monuments, stories and legends, details about interesting Sternberg personalities. Each of the nine facilities contains different information, in English, German and Czech.
Šternberk is a traditional venue for popular hilltop sports car races on the Ecce Homo track, which give the city a reputation throughout Europe. Every year, the European Championship and the Ecce Homo Historic race take place in Šternberk.
