The town of Trutnov can be found in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains on the river Úpa in the Hradec Králové Region. The first written mention of the town can be found in 1260, when the original Slavic settlement was renamed Úpa. Trutnov used to be the dowry town of Czech queens and during its history it was known for its textile and later leather and electrical engineering industries. At present, it is the second largest city in the Hradec Králové region and forms the natural modern center of the eastern Giant Mountains.
