The oldest surviving written mention of Benátky nad Jizerou dates from 1052. The city is divided into several city districts, namely Benátky nad Jizerou I (New Venice), Benátky nad Jizerou II (Old Venice), Benátky nad Jizerou III (Obodř), Dražice and Kbel.
