The town of Tanvald is located in the district of Jablonec nad Nisou in the Liberec Region and also includes two local parts, Šumburk nad Desnou and Žďár.
The first mention of a lumbering settlement on the left bank of Kamenice comes from the second half of the 16th century, when it was probably part of Smržovka; it became a separate village at the beginning of the 17th century. The first written mention of the village comes from 1611.
Currently, the town of Tanvald has 6, 146 permanent residents.
Tanvald is a natural center of life in the area of the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains. It is also the tourist center of the eastern tip of the Jizera Mountains, where hundreds of domestic and foreign visitors come throughout the year.
