The town of Vodňany is located in the district of Strakonice in the South Bohemian Region approx. 30 km northwest of České Budějovice on the Blanica river. Currently there are approximately 7, 000 inhabitants.,
The town of Vodňany is known primarily for its fishing and fish pond tradition.
Part of the city is a monument zone including the city fortifications, and part of the municipality includes the Libějovicko-Lomecko and Křtětice monument zones.
The town of Vodňany was founded as a settlement near the gold-bearing rice fields, according to archaeological findings at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, but no documents have survived about the town's foundation.
One of the largest companies in Vodňany is the company A. Pöttinger, which manufactures agricultural machinery, and the Vodňanská drubež company, which operates large poultry plants, is also located in Vodňany.
