The village of Úsilné with 458 inhabitants is located 6 km from the center of České Budějovice at an altitude of 399 m above sea level. Until 1925, the village was called Oselno or Voselno, which probably originated from the breeding of draft animals for the nearby mines.
The first mention of the settlement dates from 1333, when King John of Luxembourg dedicated the hospital to St. Václav in Budějovice seven lans in the village of Hoslové (Úsilné).
During the reign of Emperor Rudolph II. the St. mine was established between Úsilný and the nearby Hůry. Eliáš, in which 1600 silver cents were mined annually. There was a constant increase in water in the mine, which was withdrawn from Vesecká and Libničská tunnels. The problems with drainage were supposed to be solved by Eliáš's tunnel, the construction of which was started on July 20, 1574 in the direction of Úsilné and lasted for about 200 years with breaks. By the time the finished work could contribute to mine drainage, mining was already in decline. The tunnel ends in Úsilné in the garden of house number 68 at the foot of the south-western slope at an altitude of 400 m above sea level. In the middle of the 20th century, it abundantly supplied the city of České Budějovice with high-quality drinking water. Currently, the village management is considering making a part of the gallery under the village available to the public.
An important municipal monument is the neo-Gothic chapel of St. Wenceslas from 1900, which was reconstructed in 2001 and decorated with 14 paintings (50x45 cm, mounted on wood) with the theme of the Stations of the Cross from ca. painter Renata Štolbová. In the village, you can see elements of the peasant baroque, the gables with large volutes (spirals) are particularly interesting. The most remarkable is the farm no. 1 "U Sukdolů", said to have the largest volutes in the region and no. 9 "U Proks".
