The Ministry for Regional Development belongs to the system of central state administration bodies of the Czech Republic in the areas defined by the relevant legal documents. Due to the volume of its powers, competencies and responsibilities for the management of financial resources, it plays an important role in the state administration. The Ministry of Regional Development is the central body of state administration in matters of regional policy, housing policy, housing development, rental of flats and non-residential premises, spatial planning, building regulations, expropriation, investment policy, tourism, public auctions, real estate activities and funeral services. .

In addition to exercising the above competencies, the Ministry of Regional Development:
- manages funds intended for the provision of housing policy and regional state policy, coordinates the activities of ministries and other central state administration bodies in securing housing policy and regional state policy
- fulfills the role of the National Coordinating Body (NCB), which establishes a uniform framework for the management and implementation of assistance provided from the Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund in the Czech Republic
- provides activities related to the EU Cohesion Policy in the Czech Republic, which is focused on reducing differences between the level of development of various regions of the Czech Republic and on the convergence of the economic level of the Czech Republic with the EU
- ensures the participation of the Czech Republic in the Territorial Agenda of the EU, which creates a strategic and action framework for the territorial development of Europe in relation to national concepts of territorial development
- provides information methodological assistance to higher territorial self-governing units, cities, municipalities and their associations and ensures activities related to the process of involvement of territorial self-governing units in European regional structures.
