The first surviving written mention of Pustkovec dates back to 1377, when it is mentioned in one of the documents on the division of Opava between the sons of Prince Nicholas II. The documents were issued on 18 April 1377. The latter, which defines the part of the princes of Václav and Přemek, contains an indication of Pustkovec.
It is clear from the text that Pustkovec formed a manor estate, whose holders were subject to the princely chamber as leckers. The administration of the village was provided by the nobility, which appointed the reeve as an assistant to the matrimonial administration.

The character of the village has been significantly changed by the urban development, to which more than 300 ha of land was occupied by the citizens of Pustkovec.
On the fields are now houses of the Main Street, buildings of the Mining University, Slovan, depot of the transport company, Retirement Home, 7th and 8th construction district, housing estate Nový Pustkovec and others.
On May 20, 1957, Pustkovec was merged with Poruba and joined the city of Ostrava.
The plenary session of the National Committee of the City of Ostrava on 14 September 1990 approved the establishment of 22 city districts, including Pustkovec.
