The statutory town of Havířov is located on the southern edge of the Ostrava-Karviná industrial area in the Karviná district in the Moravian-Silesian region. The surface of the city is slightly rugged, at an altitude of about 260 meters, and is furrowed by several valleys along rivers and streams. From the administrative point of view, the town is divided into parts: Město, Šumbark, Podlesí, Životice, Bludovice, Prostřední Suchá, Dolní Suchá and Dolní Datyně. Havířov has been a statutory town since 1990. The main reason for the establishment of the town of Havířov was the need to provide apartments for workers in mines and smelters during the period of industrial development in the Ostrava region after World War II. The beginnings of the town of Havířov are connected with the construction of mining settlements in the autumn of 1947 on the border of Šenov and Šumbark. The name of the town was chosen in a public competition from many different names (eg Bezručov, Čurdov, Faratín, Lidobudovatelov, Budovatelnice, Budosociokolektivov, Rudohvězdov, Stalin, Gottwaldův Horníkov, Všemírov, Šťastnov and others).
Administratively, Havířov became a city on the basis of the relevant resolution of the Czechoslovak government from 1955, and on December 4, 1955, it was granted city rights. At present, Havířov has around 31, 000 inhabitants. Havířov is therefore the youngest town in the Czech Republic.
