Strahovske nadvori 132/1, Praha 1 - Hradcany 118 00
The Royal Canonry of the Premonstratensian Order in Strahov is one of the oldest still existing monasteries of the Premonstratensian Order in the world. Since the arrival of the first Premonstratensian Order in 1143, the religious community has been successfully developing religious life here and has played an important role in the history of the Czech lands throughout its history.
The library of the Premonstratensian monastery in Strahov is one of the most valuable and best-preserved historical libraries. The historical part of the library contains over 200, 000 volumes in its collection, of which over 3, 000 manuscripts and 1, 500 first editions, stored in a special depository.
The picture gallery, the foundation of which was laid as early as 1835, today contains almost one and a half thousand paintings. The most valuable part is installed in the corridors of the cloister on the floor of the convent building. Two hundred paintings present part of a collection from the 14th to the middle of the 19th century. The chronologically arranged installation is a reminder of the original presentation of the collection in one of the halls of the convent building.
