The town of Hrádek nad Nisou is located on the edge of the Lusatian Mountains in the Zittau Basin. The Lusatian Nisa flows through it. Originally, a settlement called Gród (castle) was founded by the Milčany tribe. The oldest written mentions of Hrádek are from 1288. From the 12th century, the town became part of the Czech Kingdom. An important trade route from Prague to the Baltic Sea passed through it. In 1424, the city was burned down by the Hussite army.
Due to its location near the Czech-German-Polish trinity, the city cultivates a lively cultural relationship with its neighbors. Every year, Hrádek nad Nisou, Žitava and Bogatynia alternate in organizing the Trojmezí Festival. It is no coincidence that the Hrádek primary school (ZŠ Lidická) has one class with an orientation towards the German language. Children from the Czech school regularly visit their friends in a German school and vice versa.
The surrounding villages of Dolní Sedlo, Horní Sedlo, Dolní Suchá, Oldřichov na Hranicích Václavice, Uhelná, Loučná and Donín also belong to the town of Hrádek nad Nisou.
